| The lack of a thriving visitor culture in Mayumba has meant that many craftsmen and women have no market for their products. However, the town and surrounding villages contain many talented artists, and visitors in the future should be able to choose from a range of traditional goods including local drums, harps, and mouth-bows, masks, sculptures, resin torches, tableware, and the piece de resistance – fabulous and intricately woven mats made from the abundant raphia plants that grow in the region's swamplands. Please click here to find out more about Mayumba's mats. | |

A unique mix of traditional and contemporary art is found in the vivid paintings of Mayumba's own Achille Mombo, who often depicts local traditions and legends in his pieces. When he's not painting or composing music on his guitar, Mombo teaches art theory and studio techniques at the College Jean-Baptiste Moandat in Mayumba. |
