The single-space car ferry on the Nyanga River on the Gamba Road   Gorgeous views over Panga Point - a 10 minute side trip off the Gamba Road at the village of Panga

Via Gamba:

Air Service (Libreville office: 74 71 18) flies twice a day Monday through Friday from Libreville to Gamba (68,000 CFA). A bush taxi goes directly from Gamba to Mayumba (15,000 CFA) on Saturdays, otherwise there are daily bush taxis from Gamba to Tchibanga (15,000 CFA), where, after a hand-cable ferry crossing at Bomé-Bomé, and a 10 minute trip down the Nyanga River on a second ferry, you can alight at the village of Lubomo and catch another truck going south to Mayumba for the last hour of the drive (5 hours total). Alternatively, continue on to Tchibanga and come down the following day.

If you are staying the night in Gamba, try the Auberge "Chez Rigon" or the Hotel of the Conseil Departemental.

Via Tchibanga:

There are also flights with La Nationale ( Libreville:) on Mondays and Fridays from Libreville to Tchibanga, Mayumba's closest neighbor town. It's best to reserve tickets in advance to avoid overbooking. Libreville to Tchibanga tickets cost: CFA 55,000.

There are taxis that can take you to a hotel in Tchibanga for the night, to leave early next day for Mayumba (CFA 2,000), or a bush taxi that can pick you up at the airport and take you directly to Mayumba with advanced notice. If you do choose to stay in Tchibanga, the most charming hotel in the town, (and we think, the country), is the Hotel Modibotie (landline: 82 02 51, cellulars: 06 04 20 49 or 07 54 83 76). It has a pool, sunken courtyard garden, restaurant/pizzeria, and bakery in its complex, and a lovely continental breakfast in the mornings. If there are no vacancies there, try the Hotel Relais, on the main road going to Mayumba, just before you leave town, which overlooks the Nyanga River and has spartan but clean rooms with air conditioning, ensuite bath, and TV.

The ‘gare routière' (bush taxi station) is at the ‘nouveau marché' (new market). Any taximan in town will know where to take you. You should be at the gare by 6:30 am to get a spot in one of the three trucks that do the Mayumba route. It is a bit of a madhouse in the mornings, with people travelling to many different towns in the interior. Keep a close eye on your bags. One-way transport to Mayumba in the cabin is CFA 6,000, and in the back of the truck CFA 5,000.

The road from Tchibanga to Mayumba is a bumpy but beautiful 108 kilometers, taking you through savannah to hilly forest, then to bamboo groves. About halfway through the voyage, there is an enormous tree that is said to be inhabited by magic spirits. Because of this, roadbuilders left it standing, and the road splits in two around this sacred tree. The trip usually takes about 3 hours, but can take longer on the slippery roads of the rainy season. Your first breathtaking view of Mayumba comes about 7 km before you arrive at the free ferry, where you will cross the Banio lagoon onto the Mayumba peninsula. The bush taxi can drop you off at your hotel, in the central market, or in the fishing village of l'Office.

If you are driving a private vehicle from Libreville :

Total travel time to drive the 700 kilometers from Libreville to Mayumba can range from 12-20 hours, depending on road conditions. A 4X4 vehicle is a must. During the dry season, the road is easier to travel than during the rainy season. As the Mayumba ferry only operates between 7:30am and 6pm, you should split the travel over two days, driving to either Mouila or Tchibanga on the first day, and then continuing to Mayumba on the second. The road from Libreville is paved until Lambarené, in fair condition from Lambarené to Fougamou, rough from Fougamou to Mouila, fair from Mouila to Ndéndé, then hilly and bumpy from Ndéndé to Tchibanga and Mayumba.
